There is an alter-ego lurking within all of us. You know, that little attention-seeking asshole who never grew up, who goads us on to doing stupid and annoying things. My alter-ego’s name is Johnny Sunday. He is all of my worst impulses rolled into one. While most people are able to keep that part of themselves chained up in some dusty attic in their brains, Johnny just won’t let up. To make things worse, he even has secret dreams of becoming a stand-up comedian. Fortunately, he’s too much of a coward and too lazy to realize this dream. But that doesn’t stop him from dragging us through the mud as he explores this career option.
show more“Too Scared and Lazy to Stand Up” is a journey into the genre of stand up comedy. An exploration of humor and why we laugh at the things we do. It is also a raw assessment of our thin-skinned approach to comedy these days. It is every funny person’s duty to democratically offend our sensibilities, to get us thinking. There is something funny in every situation and everyone should be fair game. Though some have suffered more than others and don’t deserve to be kicked when they’re down, laughter is the only way to even the playing field. Rather than walking on eggshells, we need to laugh right in each other’s faces. More importantly, we need to learn how to laugh at ourselves. For humor is the only way we can laugh all the ugliness, hate and stupidity off the face of the Earth.
As Johnny explores this genre and his own fears of getting up on the comedic stage, he comes to no conclusions whatsoever. These are the ramblings of a late-nite, phantom DJ from a less moral dimension. His narcotic narration careens through absurd stories, anecdotes and observations, irreverently poking fun at everything and nothing at the same time.
Most of all, this podcast is a tribute to all of the heroes of stand up comedy: celebrated, unsung and fallen. A celebration of all of the wonderful knuckleheads out there who have dared to put their egos on the line just to get some laughs. They’re all better people than Johnny Sunday will ever be, because he’s Too Scared and Lazy to Stand Up!
